When I first heard about this book from a good friend and mentor, I thought it was a sequel to The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene, so I devoured that book and then got to The 50th Law. What I read was an amazing, stand-alone book that was both practical and highly inpiring.
The book centers around fear and how to conquer it in order to live a more free and successful life.
Without further ado, here are the top life lessons from The 50th Law:
1. Your fears are a prison that prohibit you from doing certain things.
2. You shouldn't be afraid of one of your ventures failing, but rather you should see that venture as an experiment that informs you rather than a mistake that defines you.
3. Don't be afraid to see things for what they are, because that will be the best way for you to make a well-informed descision that will help you in the future.
4. Criticism does not make people work harder, but leading them by example does.
5. Like anything, the ability to control your fear is a skill that you can develop.
6. Fear of failure prevents people from mastering skills.
7. Boredom prevents people from mastering skills.
8. People have overcome much greater obstacles than we have to overcome to succeed. 50 Cent was shot and had no connections in the music industry and Frederick Douglas escaped slavery.
9. Talk is cheap. To figure out what people really want, you have to pay attention to their actions.
10. To overcome all other fears, one must accept that death is inevitable. That is the key to embracing life.
11. You must have a vision of the future to motivate your teammates. Also, that vision will keep you focused on acheiving your goals.
12. You must be deeply educated about your market if you wish to succeed in that same market.
13. Your bosses keep you around out of convenience, not loyalty. Therefore, you must be self-reliant enough to sink or swim in your own independent venture. Alliances you create must be temporary and you should not rely on someone else to make you successful.
14. Always be moving forward. There is no perfect time. If an obstacle presents itself, turn it into an advantage.
15. Have multiple ventures going at once. Whether the venture succeeds or fails, it's just a data point for the future.
16. Never try to be someone else. That desire comes from a fear of being yourself.
